Refugee Week takes place every year across the world in the week around World Refugee Day on the 20 June. In the UK, Refugee Week is a nationwide programme of arts, cultural and educational events that celebrate the contribution of refugees to the UK, and encourages a better understanding between communities.
Haringey Welcome’s contribution to Refugee Week 2018 will see three Year 6 students awarded for their poems on the theme of Welcome.
With a deadline of 11 June, students have time after the initial session to work on their poems, before submitting them anonymously. Haringey Welcome is thrilled to have persuaded two well-known poets, Hannah Lowe, who herself lives in Haringey, and Raymond Antrobus, a Hackney resident, to judge the competition.
The prize-giving ceremony will be Haringey Welcome’s contribution to Refugee Week 2018. It takes place on
Saturday 23 June, 3 – 5pm
at Snug Art Cafe, 549 Green Lanes,
N8 0RL.
First prize has been generously donated by the Big Green Bookshop in Wood Green; the other two prizes are funded by Haringey NUT. The NUT donation will also pay for an anthology of all the submitted poems, with every entrant receiving a free copy.
There are lots of other great events taking place across the country for Refugee Week, a list of which you can find over on the refugee week website.
