On Wednesday 17 April Haringey Welcome hosted an election hustings for the forthcoming Greater London Assembly and Mayoral elections due on 2 May. The hustings was titled ‘Is London Dying? Reclaiming a City of Affordable and Inclusive Housing‘ and focused on London’s housing crisis and in particular its impact on migrant communities.

The evening kicked off with a panel of expert speakers from Migrants Organise, London Renters Union Haringey branch, and The Museum of Homelessness, brilliantly chaired by independent consultant and homelessness activist Gill Taylor.

This first panel aired many urgent policy issues that informed the following hustings debate and Q&A with GLA candidates Joanne McCartney AM (Labour), Cllr Benali Hamdache (Green), and Guy Russo (Liberal Democrat) taking part – again expertly chaired by Haringey Welcome’s Myria Georgiou.

We heard calls to bring asylum accommodation back into communities and out of the hands of for-profit corporates; for an end to punitive and racist ‘Right to Rent’ checks; for the introduction of rent controls; for an end to the use of bailiffs to collect Council Tax debt; and of course, calls for more social housing.

We are now members of the new Homes4All campaign – a coalition of housing, migrant, and refugee organisations that campaigns for safe and secure homes for everyone in the UK. You can find out more about the campaign here..
